Pattern drench your way design perfection

Pattern drenching is the trend interior experts can’t stop talking about. It takes the colour drenching movement and adds motifs into the mix for a heady dose of maximalism.

Just like colour drenching, pattern drenching involves decorating multiple surfaces but it also crosses over into soft furnishings – so rugs, blinds, cushions, curtains, and sofa and armchair upholstery can be brought into the design fold.

Pattern drenching can involve many forms, from delicate designs through to dramatic boldness. You can choose to use the same pattern everywhere or opt for several motifs – clashing or complimentary, depending on your design goal. Impact can also be amplified by the size of the print and the colour palettes used.

If you’d like to have a go at pattern drenching but are overwhelmed by choice (or nervous about making a mistake) here’s our guide. It’ll take you from entry level drenching through to the borderline theatrical – take your pick!

    Subtle

Pattern does not have to be prominent. Far from it! Some of the classiest interior designs feature very subtle patterns without a hint of clashing. If you want to dip your toes into pattern drenching, stick to a light, neutral set of colours and look for small delicate motifs.

The palest, irregular dots printed onto wallpaper can form a pretty background delicate enough to work with other patterns. Layer the Lots of Dots design in the Hemp/Biscuit/Maize colourway with the Spot duvet cover set, the Alda Weave curtains in Putty and the Watercolour Abstract cushion in Green/Multi.

    Coastal

Stripes are synonymous with the seaside, from red and white banded lighthouses and colourful deckchairs to Punch and Judy tents and sticks of rock. Jane Clayton stocks an amazing collection of striped goods for the home.

Try a mix of wallpaper, fabric and accessories, such as the Glastonbury stripe wallpaper in Nautical Blue or Pale Blue, the Ella stripe fabric in Sky, cushions in Sail Stripe and roman blinds in Denim Alderton fabric.

    Botanical ‘lite’

Our fondness for ferns, delicate trailing leaves and whimsical foliage shows no sign of abating, bringing a touch of gentle nature to our homes. Botanical prints in soft muted shades offer a great mid-point on pattern drenching’s sliding scale of impact.

Strike the right balance between colour and pattern with Beltane in Grass from House of Hackney. This meadow-inspired print features irises, bell flowers and dandelions printed on a sage green background. Available as a wallpaper, a hemp fabric sold by the metre and as ready-made curtains.

    Tropical storm

Drawing influences from far-flung shores, tropical prints are the height of statement-making pattern drenching. Distinctive palms, giant monstera leaves, bright, blousy flowers and even the odd flamingo create bold colour and pattern interest.

Interior décor brand Graham and Brown will help you perfect the art of tropical pattern drenching. Try the Botanique Jungle Dawn bespoke wall mural, the Midnight Tropic wallpaper and a pair of the Borneo Emerald curtains.
